What is Osteomyology?

  • Osteomyology relieves pain and stiffness
  • Osteomyology boosts the body's natural defences
  • Osteomyology releases emotional baggage

Do you suffer from...

... if so, Osteomyology can help you. Read down this page or click the above links to find out how.

Osteomyology is the art and science of whole body realignment through gentle manipulation, supported by a range of complementary therapies. Realigning the body relieves musculoskeletal pain and improves the function of internal organs.

Osteomyologists also work to keep the nervous system free from interference by misaligned spinal bones which cause decreased function, pain and poor health.

Although most people seek out Osteomyology for its safe and highly effective approach to the treatment of pain arising from the muscles, joints and nerves, they are pleased to find out that Osteomyology offers a holistic approach to health and wellness. Osteomyology is a natural hands-on approach to total health care.

Manipulation is the ancient art of freeing up joints by hand. Freeing up the joints of the spine releases tension in the muscles, increases range of motion and decreases pain. Some techniques produce a characteristic "cracking" or "popping" sound through gas being released from a fixated joint. Other manipulation techniques (such as Instrument Adjustment or Craniosacral Osteomyology) are much gentler and equally effective.

All forms of manipulation are safe when carried out by qualified professionals, who are trained to spot contra-indications to treatment.

The human body has a fantastic self-healing mechanism. Physical, chemical and emotional factors limit this natural ability. Osteomyologists work to remove blockages to the body’s expression of health.

Back, Neck and Hip

  • Lower back pain

  • Shoulder blades pain

  • Stiff neck

  • Hip pain or restriction

Osteomyologists consider the back, neck and hip to be one functional unit. This means that although it is composed of 24 vertebrae and the hip bones, a problem in any area of this unit can cause pain in any other part of it.
By treating this unit as a whole, we can greatly speed up recovery time from pain, injury or limited range of motion. We use gentle joint manipulation, massage and a range of other therapies to relieve your pain and give you your life back.

Shoulder, Arm, Wrist and Hand

  • Stiff shoulders

  • Pain between the shoulder blades

  • Pain down the arm

  • Tennis or golfers elbow

  • RSI or carpal tunnel

  • Arthritis symptoms

Shoulder problems are often caused by tension in the neck and/or stress in everyday living. The shoulder muscles attach to the vertebrae in the neck, so by releasing these first we greatly speed up the recovery process.

Shoulders tend to stiffen up due to stress or poor posture. As we work to release the physical symptoms, we also work on releasing the emotional ones. So if you feel stuck in your life and your shoulders and stiff, we may be able to help you.

Arm pain also generally comes from the neck or shoulders, so we'd treat this as a whole, finding the cause of your problems.

Elbow pain can be due to sports or accidents and we can help by losing up the joint, massaging the muscles and using advanced lasers to treat the ligaments and tendons.

Carpel tunnel syndrome is unfortunately quite common in today's world. We can treat it by manipulating the joints of the carpal bones, thereby reducing pain.

Leg, Knee, Ankle and Foot

  • Pain down the leg

  • Knee, Ankle or Foot problems

By viewing the body as a whole, Osteomyologists can work to realign and rebalance your body's lower extremities.
A twisted ankle can cause hip problems as you adapt your walking gait, just as a hip problem can cause you to walk differently and therefore affect your ankles.
Osteomyologists always diagnose and realign the whole body, thereby speeding up the healing process.
We use a combination of manipulation and massage along with advanced lasers that speed up soft tissue healing in the lower body extremities.

Sports Injuries

With so many exciting sporting events taking place each year from the Marathons to the Olympics, sport injuries are sure to be in the news and of concern. So, if like the star names you're worried by an injury, what can you do to get back into the game?

Prevention is the best cure. Osteomyologists work to find the cause of your problem and help you achieve your optimum performance.

Osteomyology is a straightforward 21st century method of adjusting the bones and muscles of the body in order to relieve pain and restore movement. The aim of Osteomyology is to maintain the correct alignment of your spine, thus ensuring that your body's nerve supply works efficiently. Through stresses, strains, and injuries, vertebrae, muscles, and joints of the body may become misaligned impinging on nerves and causing restriction in movement. If
the spine, muscles and joints are maintained in good balance, the body has a chance to function properly and help to give that "edge" in sports performances.

It's worth investing some time in a check-up, either before a major competition to aid performance or a couple of times per year to ensure that your body's musculoskeletal system is correctly aligned from the strains that you can receive in sport. Just like the tracking of a car needs adjusting if there is a wheel wobble, so our bodies needs to be balanced to ensure peak performance. If any part of the skeleton is misaligned, particularly the pelvis or
spine, it has an effect on the overall body alignment and muscle usage. This can cause pain not only in the back, but also in other parts of the body including the shoulders, arms, hips, legs, hands, and feet.

Stress

The spine is made up of the skull, pelvis, and 24 moveable bones called vertebrae. It functions as an attachment for muscles and ligaments that allow us to move, but more importantly, it protects the nerves of the brain and spinal cord. The spine houses and is intimately connected to the central nervous system, which consists of the brain, spinal cord, spinal and peripheral nerves, and all nerves leading into every system, organ and tissue of the body.

The nervous system functions as the master system and controller of the entire body. It is constantly monitoring the changing needs of the body, and controlling and coordinating the appropriate response necessary for proper adaptation, learning and development.

A nerve interference is caused when the spinal bones become misaligned due to physical, chemical or emotional stress. This interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the nervous system, resulting in a lessening of the body's ability to express its maximum potential for health.

One of the biggest emotional cause of spinal misalignments is stress. This is because the part of the brain that deals with stress sits right above the spinal cord. When the spine misaligns, it pulls on the muscles and affects the nerve supply of the body, which creates the sort of symptoms we associate with stress or a stressful lifestyle.

  • Headaches

  • Tight shoulder muscles

  • IBS

  • Insomnia

Osteomyologists work to free the nervous system of interference through correcting spinal misalignments. Also, through these corrections, the muscles that are attached to the vertebrae relax and therefore pain and tension eases.

Instrument Adjustment

With Instrument Adjustment a neurological diagnosis procedure is carried out to distinguish which misalignment in the skull, spine or hip is holding the rest of the body out of place and causing pain or other symptoms. The Osteomyologist then uses a small hand-held device to gently release it.

With this treatment, the aim is to gently release the system in key areas so that the body can begin work on realigning itself. This makes this treatment particularly suited for the young or elderly.

After the treatment you may notice you are breathing more fully and feeling relaxed in your body; you may become aware of an urge to move or stretch; you may have a release of emotion such as laughter, tears or coughing; you may re-experience old injuries or symptoms for a short time as your body discharges them.

Your spinal corrections do not stop once you get off the table. They continue as you breathe and move. You may notice that you hear a click or popping sound in your spine later on the same day after the treatment. That’s your body realigning and correcting its own misalignments.

Because analysis and correction are not limited to just the area of pain and symptom, integration tends to be more complete and healing experiences are deeper in all areas of the body, mind, and emotions.

Craniosacral Therapy

In the early 1900’s, William G Sutherland DO realised that the skull bones were moveable to a small degree. Through his research he realised that restricted and misaligned movement lead to emotional and physical problems. By the 1930’s, he developed an examination and treatment protocol for the cranium (skull) and associated related structures of the body.

Throughout the central nervous system, which is contained by the skull, spine, sacrum and coccyx, there is a rhythmic pulsation, normally around 6 to 12 cycles a minute. Unfortunately, when the mobility of the cranium to sacral system is altered, restricted or disrupted due to injury or trauma, pain symptoms may appear due to the fact that the normal pulsations pattern is changed. Symptoms can include back, neck, jaw, tooth and face pain; tinnitus (ringing in the ear), loss of hearing, insomnia (trouble with sleeping), Anosmia, Bell’s Palsy, trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain), other cranial nerve dysfunctions, sinus troubles, emotional and thought disturbances, and visual disturbances.

The Craniosacral system can be treated through specific gentle pressure, which is directed at restrictions that are diagnosed by palpation by the Osteomyologist.

Many children have a dysfunctional Craniosacral system. A child born in pain may learn to adapt, unfortunately a child living with pain may use up much of it’s buffer zone. This could lead to a child having a “short fuse” due to high anger or frustration levels, short attention span, chronic fatigue, insomnia , depression, learning difficulties, hyperactivity, hypoactivity (does not want to do anything) and/or any of the other emotional or physical disorders. A child can be experiencing one or more of these problems when they are brought in for help, especially after their GP or Medical Consultant have failed to help them.

Osteomyology and Healing

  • Pain or other physical symptoms

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Feeling lost / disconnected

These are signs that your mind/body are not aligned with your spirit.

From a healing perspective Osteomyology is the art and science of realignment. We unblock people on the physical, emotional and energetic level to realign them with their purpose and path.

In the process of healing, you may experience symptoms. When viewed from a healing perspective symptoms are not judged as good or bad. They are agents of change that provide an opportunity for growth. Symptoms are an indication that your body is overwhelmed, and they appear to alert you that a change is needed for progress to occur.

The goal of Osteomyology in healing is to help you reintegrate body and mind with spirit, to allow your true nature to be more fully expressed. In the process you can learn to feel the full range of emotions, no longer blocking out feelings, which stop the expression of your true self.
